Why did you open Wijs?

The idea of Wijs is actually very basic, offering people a place where you can really work on your health from a clinical setting, knowledge transfer is crucial in this I think. After working at a gym for a few years during my studies, I was convinced that the quality of training had to improve to really help people move forward. During my internship at Harvard Strength and Conditioning I saw the perfect example of how teams can work together and each make their own contribution. That was my great inspiration to bring together all types of guidance within Wijs, from physiotherapy, personal training, fitness but of course also massage and osteopathy, for example.

Do you do a lot of sports yourself?

I mainly do endurance sports like running, cycling or skating to not have to think about anything at all. Twice a year I set myself a sporting challenge. For example, skating the alternative Elfstedentocht or running a marathon in the summer.

What are your own areas of interest?

After my studies in physiotherapy, I obtained my master’s degree in movement sciences at the VU. After this, I increasingly focused on the neck and head region, ultimately resulting in a specialization as an orofacial physiotherapist. I did this master’s degree in Nijmegen and was offered in collaboration with the dentistry program. I am now in the Headache Network and I also see a lot of tinnitus, dizziness and jaw problems. I always look at all these things from my belief that posture is the start of everything.

What do you think is the most important thing when training?

A good posture. If that is okay, you can do whatever you want. People sometimes say that they are not suited for running, for example. But if your basic posture is good, you can get much more out of your body. You get more energy and your world literally becomes bigger because you stand up straighter. That is why I also focus a lot on the details when giving training. I also believe very much in education during training. It becomes more fun and has more effect if you really understand why some details can be different.

What is your greatest weakness?

I have a huge sweet tooth. Especially chocolate with praline filling. My problem is that I never take just one piece, but eat the whole bar. But for that I have to keep exercising a lot.
