After an accident, surgery, or injury, it can be difficult to fully recover and resume your daily activities. At Wijs, we offer specialized orthopedic and trauma rehabilitation, focused on restoring both physical and mental strength. Our goal is to support you every step of the way toward recovery, so you can confidently return to work, sports, and other important aspects of your life.
Â
Wijs collaborates with the Trauma Rehabilitation Network Netherlands. This means that our (sports) physiotherapists, Daan Pronk and Steven Dorlandt, have received additional training to professionally guide clients with trauma-related injuries and help them achieve their goals.
We understand that the beginning of the rehabilitation process is crucial for a successful recovery. In the first phase, rehabilitation can take place at home if necessary, allowing you to start the recovery process in your own environment.
Â
Depending on your health insurance, you may be entitled to up to one year of physiotherapy after surgery. This period, known as the “year after surgery,” is an important phase to focus entirely on your rehabilitation. We do everything we can to support you in this and ensure that you receive the best guidance to achieve your goals.
Trauma surgery focuses on the recovery of injuries caused by an accident, also known as trauma injuries. Trauma injuries can range from simple sprains and fractures to more complex injuries such as open fractures, spinal or pelvic fractures, and multi-trauma (multiple fractures in different parts of the body).
Â
Orthopedic surgery primarily focuses on restoring the function of muscles, tendons, bones, ligaments, and joints as effectively as possible, so that movement can occur with little or no limitation or pain. Examples of procedures include ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, knee/hip replacement, and arthroscopic procedures for shoulder, hip, knee, and ankle injuries.
Â
Trauma surgery often needs to be performed urgently after an accident, whereas orthopedic surgery is typically planned in advance.
Â
However, surgery is just the first step – think of it as laying the foundation for building a house. The actual construction of the house happens afterward, which is the rehabilitation phase. Orthopedic and trauma rehabilitation is a specialized branch of physiotherapy that follows surgical procedures for orthopedic conditions and traumatic injuries. This can be a long process aimed at restoring physical functions such as mobility, strength, endurance, and stability, ultimately enabling you to live, move, and participate in sports fully, safely, and freely again.
Â
Most clients come to us after surgery for rehabilitation, but this is not always the case. There are also situations where the orthopedic surgeon decides not to operate (yet), but rehabilitation is still necessary. Pre-surgical orthopedic rehabilitation also exists – it is now widely known that people recover faster if they go into surgery as strong as possible.
Â
The duration of the rehabilitation process depends on the nature and severity of the complaints, as well as the client’s goals, capabilities, preferences, and medical history. As a result, treatment and rehabilitation plans at Wijs are always personalized and tailored to your goals.
Â
The first step is to reduce pain and swelling and improve mobility, with an immediate focus on movement quality to prevent compensatory patterns as much as possible. We then work on restoring strength, stability, mobility, endurance, and self-confidence. Our approach is based on active rehabilitation and goal-oriented exercises tailored to your objectives.
