Specialized Physiotherapy During and After Cancer

A cancer diagnosis and the treatment that follows can be overwhelming, with a far-reaching impact on both body and mind. Experiencing loss of strength and function, pain, movement limitations, fatigue, and uncertainty about what is still possible are common both during and after treatment.

At Wijs, we understand these challenges, and we provide specialized, evidence-based support to help you safely regain strength, confidence, and quality of life at your own pace.

Wijs collaborates with Onconet, a nationwide Dutch network of specialized oncology physiotherapists dedicated to improving the quality and accessibility of oncology physiotherapy.

When you come to Wijs with a cancer diagnosis, you will be guided in a personalized, safe, and active way, with the goal of restoring trust in your body and returning to a full quality of life.

Who is Oncology Physiotherapy for?

Oncology physiotherapy is for anyone affected by cancer who wants support in maintaining or improving their physical function and well-being.

It is suitable for people who are undergoing or recovering from chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, or hormone therapy. It is also appropriate before and after cancer-related surgery. It supports people experiencing cancer-related fatigue, loss of strength, reduced fitness, or movement limitations. It is helpful when dealing with pain, stiffness, or physical complaints after treatment, and for those who want guidance to remain active and independent during treatment. It is also suited for individuals who want to safely return to sports, work, and daily activities.

Specialized physiotherapy is possible in all phases of cancer care: from the moment of diagnosis, throughout treatment, during recovery, and also in a palliative phase where maintaining the best possible quality of life is central.

Common Conditions and Symptoms We Treat

Our goal is to help you manage these symptoms safely and effectively so they interfere less with your daily life.

Oncology Physiotherapy at Wijs

At Wijs, we work according to the most recent scientific insights and guidelines for oncological rehabilitation and exercise physiology. Our approach is evidence-based, individualized, and goal-oriented.

Safety, supervision, and gradual progression are central to everything we do. Every program is tailored to your medical situation, treatment phase, and energy levels. Even on days when you feel fatigued or unsure, we adapt the session to what your body can handle.

Treatment begins with an extensive intake and physical assessment. From there, we guide you through exercise therapy focused on strength, conditioning, and functional movement. We work to improve physical capacity and energy levels, reduce fatigue and pain, and restore mobility and daily function. We also support recovery after surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals when needed.

We place a strong focus on supervised strength training, as it is proven to significantly support recovery, reduce fatigue, and maintain muscle mass.

Why is Movement so Important During Cancer Treatment?

Scientific research consistently shows that supervised exercise and strength training can counteract muscle loss, help maintain or improve bone density, support the body’s anti-inflammatory capacity, reduce fatigue, improve daily functioning, strengthen mental resilience, and improve tolerance to cancer treatments.

At Wijs, we meet you where you are. We ensure that movement and training are always safe, responsible, and adapted to your condition so you can stay active with confidence, even during treatment.

Practical Information

A referral from an Oncologist is required. With a referral, physiotherapy is considered a chronic indication under Dutch healthcare regulations. This means that treatment is reimbursed from basic insurance after the first 20 sessions. You will receive personal guidance from a physiotherapist registered with Onconet, and training takes place in modern exercise and treatment facilities.
